Origin – 御由来 –

On August 19th, Kenji 2 (1276 AD), during the Kamakura period, the area of Kameari was then called Kamemura, Kasai Mikuriya, Shimosa Province. As it was part of the sacred territory of Katori Grand Shrine, a divided spirit of the main shrine (Futsunushi-no-Okami) was welcomed and enshrined as the village’s guardian deity.
After that, the two great deities, Kashima (武甕槌大神:Takemikazuchi-no-Okami) and Ikisu (岐大神:Kuna-no-Okami), were enshrined together, and the shrine continued to protect the villagers and people of the surrounding area as one of the three shrines of the eastern provinces, for approximately 740 years, leading to its current state.

Deity Enshrined – 御祭神(Gosaishin) –

Futsunushi-no-Okami [経津主大神(ふつぬしのおおかみ)]

He is a powerful sword god and warrior god who appears in Japanese mythology, and is primarily described in the Nihon Shoki as a meritorious retainer who, along with Takemikazuchi, pacified Ashihara no Nakatsukuni.

Enshrined alongside: Takemikazuchi-no-Okami [相殿:武甕槌大神(たけみかづちのおおかみ)]

He is the strongest warrior god in Japanese mythology and is known as the principal deity of Kashima Shrine (Ibaraki Prefecture). He is worshipped as the god of thunder, swords, sumo wrestling, and earthquake quelling, and is enshrined at Kashima shrines throughout Japan.

Enshrined alongside: Kunado-no-Okami [相殿:岐大神(くなどのおおかみ )]

A deity considered to be the prototype of the Dōsojin, who protects against evil spirits and misfortunes at road junctions (crossroads) and village boundaries.

– Aidono [相殿(あいどの)] .The practice of enshrining other deities together with the principal deity (main god) in a single shrine building (honden), or the shrine building itself. –

Divine Virtues – 御神徳(Go Shin toku) –

– Divine Virtues [御神徳(ごしんとく)].This term refers to the collective power of the deities enshrined in Shinto shrines to hear people’s wishes and bring them happiness and blessings. –

Prayers for protection from disaster (除災招福開運厄除)、Leg and back health (足腰健康)、Family safety (家内安全)、Prayer for a safe delivery (安産祈願)、
The enshrined deity, Futsunushi-no-Okami, and Takemikazuchi-no-Okami, enshrined in the same building, have both been revered since ancient times as gods of war (gods of battle). Therefore, they are now enshrined together in the same building as “gods who overcome all obstacles, ward off disaster, bring good fortune, and protect against misfortune” and “gods of sports.”
Kida-no-Okami is widely and deeply revered as the god of healthy legs and feet, and the god of household safety, who guides people on their journeys and protects the settlement from disasters coming from outside.

God Of Legs And Sports – 足腰・スポーツの神様 –

Captain Tsubasa

Because the “Dōsojin” (roadside deity) here is believed to preside over strong legs, many worshippers visit to pray for improved soccer skills and good health of their legs and hips. It has also become a sacred place because the Nankatsu SC, an amateur soccer club headed by Yoichi Takahashi, the creator of “Captain Tsubasa,” holds its victory prayers here.

This shrine engages in activities such as installing bronze statues of characters from the manga “Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-mae Hashutsujo,” which is set in Kameari, distributing anime-themed ema (votive tablets) and goshuin (stamped shrine seals), and attracting a patisserie to the shrine grounds.
Since I’m from the generation that reads “Kochikame,” I was somewhat familiar with Kameari Katori Shrine.

Summary – 総括 –

The movie “Kokuho「国宝」” is showing at MOVIX Kameari in Ario Kameari. ( An article introducing the movie “Kokuho” ) I stopped by before seeing the “Kokuho「国宝」”, and since it’s a little outside my usual range of travel, I’m glad I visited.

kameari katori jinja

Perhaps in keeping with the name of Kameari in Katsushika Ward, instead of guardian lions, guardian turtles (turtles=亀:Kame) glared down on either side of the main torii gate at the front.
Also, if I ever have the chance to go to Kameari in Katsushika Ward again, I would like to visit this shrine.
