I was driving along the Nikko Kaido (National Route 4) heading north from Saitama Prefecture without any particular thought, when I entered Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture and passed Mamada Station on the JR Utsunomiya Line, the car navigation system showed “Mamada Hachiman Shrine”, so I decided to go and check it out since it looked like a large site.

The festival held on May 5th, “Mamata no Jagamita” (Snake Festival), was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan in 2019. The sight of seven snakes over 15m long gathering in one place is a spectacular sight, and the grounds of the shrine, filled with the scent of fresh greenery, are bustling with spectators every year.

I’d like to go, but I don’t like crowds so I’m hesitant, but I’d like to go someday.

Mamada Hachiman Shrine was founded a long time ago, and is said to have been built around 1,300 years ago in the mid-Nara period (Tenpyo era).

During the Taira no Masakado Rebellion that occurred around 939, the military commander Fujiwara no Hidesato, who is also known for the legend of his centipede slaying, prayed for victory at this Hachimangu Shrine and other shrines and temples along the route, and successfully put an end to the rebellion, and in return for this divine favor, he donated a sacred rice field to the shrine.

In spring, the cherry blossoms are also lit up.

I walked around the pond in the park and saw the shrine, and when I looked it up after returning home I found out it has quite a long history, and I felt energized…I’d like to drop in again soon.
