Emoticon – カオモジ かおもじ (顔文字) –

Emoji originated in Japan, and emoticons have evolved in their own way, so I thought I’d introduce them to you.

Emojis and emoticons have become standard in Japan, but it is considered rude to use them at work or in emails to business partners. (It may be okay if you are on very good terms with your coworkers in the same company, but it is also considered rude to use them with superiors or people of higher ranks.)

It seems that some Asian countries use vertical emoticons similar to those used in Japan, but I didn’t know that in the case of emoticons made up of multiple characters, in Western countries and languages that use the Latin alphabet or other characters, the emoticon is written sideways in a format like “;‐)”.

The following emojis are commonly used in Europe, America, and other Latin scripts.
:) Happy
:Ⅾ Laughing with your mouth open
×D Laugh out loud
:)) Very Happy
;) Wink
:( Sad
:’-( Sad and crying face
>:( Anger

Below is a list of some emojis commonly used in Japan.

*Depending on your computer or mobile phone environment, emoticons may not be displayed correctly.

There are many more, but I’ve introduced the main ones for now.

Recently in Japan, it seems that “ojisan” (In Japan, men in their 40s to 60s are generally called “ojisan” (uncles) and women are generally called “obaasan” (aunties), but calling them by these names can be rude, so please avoid doing so when meeting someone for the first time.) tend to use emoticons. Yes, that’s right!
I tend to use them too.(;´∀`)
For some reason, the writing comes off as stiff and cold, and I can’t stand it, but maybe that’s because our phones and computers now allow us to instantly convert text into emoticons.
When it’s a hassle to reply in writing, such as when making an appointment with a friend, it can sometimes be okay to just say “Got it (”◇”)ゞ.”
Maybe that’s what I call “Ojisan” but I think I’ll continue to use it.
However, I rarely use angry emojis.
Even if I’m not angry with the other person, the person who receives it may feel that I’m angry, and it’s exhausting to deal with angry people all the time, so maybe it’s a Japanese trait to avoid them.
It’s better to send them to people who are happy, isn’t it?(*’ω’*)

Thank you for watching.
