It is relatively close to where I live and is apparently the only large-scale strolling pond garden (池泉回遊式庭園) in Saitama Prefecture.

※Strolling garden with a pond (池泉回遊式庭園:ちせんかいゆうしきていえん=Chi sen kai yū shiki tei en
)

A strolling pond garden is a style of garden in which a large pond is placed in the center, and visitors can enjoy the changing scenery as they walk around the pond along garden paths, crossing bridges, islands, and artificial hills. This is a typical style of Japanese garden that developed during the Edo period, and its distinctive feature is that the garden can be enjoyed from multiple angles as a place for social interaction such as strolling, boating, tea ceremonies and banquets.
(;^ω^) I had no idea!

When I was a student, I had a friend who lived nearby, and at the time we didn’t know what was made there, so I remember us all saying that it would be nice if it was a department store or supermarket.
When I was a child, I was disappointed to learn that there was a Japanese garden and that it cost money to enter, but I think it was only 100 yen per adult at the time.
(;^ω^)Even as a young person, I thought, “Wow, I have to pay 100 yen in the park!”
Japan has many beautiful parks that can be visited for free, but if they were to charge a fee, the barrier to entry would be higher and if you’re not interested, you probably won’t go in.
I started a website introducing Japan, and since Japanese gardens are also a part of Japanese culture, I decided to take a look.
When I first visited in April 2025, the price was 100 yen per adult, and when I posted this in September 2025, the official website showed the same price.
It is operated by the Koshigaya City Facilities Management Corporation, a public interest corporation that has been entrusted by Koshigaya City with the management and operation of public facilities, which is why admission is available at that price.

Parking: Approximately 104 spaces

Early April 2025: Free parking.

There is a shared parking lot for the Koshigaya Nō ga kudō (能楽堂) and Hanataen. There is also a bicycle parking lot.

As the number of parking spaces is limited, we ask that you cooperate by using public transportation.
Large buses cannot be parked.
There are no one-way streets outside the park, so you can see this if you walk around, but as it is a residential area, there are residents, especially small children, so it is best to take your time strolling around.
There are a few days a year when admission is free, so it may get crowded on those days.
※Never park on the street.

The entrance on the parking lot side is the Nō ga kudō (能楽堂) entrance, and the Hanataen entrance is on the right side along the sidewalk.

I tried to enter through a beautiful entrance, but it wasn’t the entrance to Hanataen.

The site covers an area of 21,290 m2 (approximately 2.1 hectares) and is a strolling garden centered around a pond.
Trees and flowers were arranged on the land, which was about 145 meters on each side, and there was also a small bamboo grove.
The park is dotted with teahouses, wooden bridges, and artificial hills, allowing visitors to enjoy the changing scenery of the seasons and the traditions of Japanese culture at the same time.

Notes etc.

Please take your trash home with you and commercial activities are prohibited.
Pets are not allowed, but assistance dogs for the disabled are allowed.
Large buses cannot be parked.
If you damage any facilities within the park, you may be required to pay compensation.
Possible temporary closure:
In addition to the New Year holidays, the park may be closed temporarily for management reasons.
It is forbidden to touch the plants.
This can sometimes happen at cherry blossom viewing parties, where people pull on branches to get closer and take pictures of the flowers with children.
It is prohibited to enter the pond or throw stones.
Do not do it anywhere other than the toilet.
※Do not do this in a deserted place just because there is no toilet nearby.
Other: *Smoking is prohibited throughout the park.
There are insects.
The garden was created from a vacant lot, but as it has been left to grow naturally, it is a good thing that insects are attracted to it.
If you don’t like insects, please protect yourself.

Thoughts after visiting the Japanese garden “Hanata en”

When I first visited in early April 2025, the cherry blossoms were in full bloom and it was very beautiful.
It was a bit sweaty walking around, but it was wonderful.(*’ω’*)
I regretted having been stingy and not gone inside the park until now.
I have no knowledge of Japanese gardens, so my photos and explanations may be off the mark.
Those who are knowledgeable about Japanese gardens will probably pay attention to the plants planted and the placement of the stones, but I’m glad I went.

The tea house and Koshigaya Nō ga kudō (能楽堂) are adjacent to the building. For more information about the Noh theater, please check their website.

Next time I’ll go see it in the fall when the leaves change color.

As an aside,(´・ω・`)If I were a millionaire, I would love to live in a house with a garden like this!
It would be very expensive to maintain and manage…
There are many more famous Japanese gardens in Japan, and if I visit any hidden gems, I’ll let you know.

Thank you for watching.
