Hatsumōde (first visit of the year to a shrine)“This is the first event in the new year to visit shrines and temples. It is usually held on New Year’s Day or during the first three days of the year (January 1st to 3rd), but it can also be held during the Matsunouchi period (January 1st to 7th in the Kanto region, January 1st to 15th in the Kansai region).”Temporary parking will be opened at nearby schools such as Koshigaya High School, but traffic will be congested.

Heading towards Koshigaya Station, cross Miyamae Bridge, a small pedestrian bridge that crosses the Moto-Arakawa River, and you will see the entrance.
People from overseas often say that in Japan, even in urban areas, the world of films like “Totoro” or “Spirited Away” suddenly appears, and I think that the entrance to Koshigaya’s Hisaizu Shrine, which you can see after crossing Miyamae Bridge, is a perfect example of this.

The approach to the shrine from the entrance is about 900m long (according to personal research, it may be shorter). There are a first torii gate, a second torii gate, and a third torii gate, and a sacred pond is located next to the third torii gate.
Food stalls line the streets during festivals and New Year’s visits to shrines.

The third torii gate

The third torii gate was constructed during the Koshigaya Okibiki Festival, in which the Itagaki Minamimon Gate of the Inner Shrine of the Imperial Grand Shrine of Ise, which was removed during the 61st Ise Grand Shrine Shikinen Sengu Ceremony, was pulled into Hisaizu Shrine. (May 21, 1995)
In the same year, it was rebuilt as a 7.5m high, 8.5m wide torii gate using 60cm thick Kiso cypress wood.
The torii gate was so sturdy and imposing that it made you forget that you were in a residential area.

Sacred Pond=Kamiike(神池)

On the banks of the pond is the site of the temporary residence of Hirata Atsutane, a scholar of Japanese classics from the late Edo period. His beloved Great Wisteria, a 250-year-old natural monument with a circumference of 7m, is so beautiful that a wisteria festival is held every year when it is in full bloom.
Every year on April 29th, a sacred dance is offered to pray for prosperity in business and safety in the home, after which the Fuji Matsuri Taidai Kagura Ko, a Shinto ritual to admire the wisteria, is held.
There is a water shrine in the center, with turtles and carp peeking out from it.
There are five shrines and an ancestral shrine around the pond.

I didn’t know that Hisaizu Shrine, the main shrine of Koshigaya, was so old that it is said to have attracted worshippers as a god who wards off disasters and brings good fortune since the Heian period (approximately 794-1185 AD).

The main deity is Okuninushi no Mikoto, the great god of nation-building and known as the god of matchmaking and good fortune, and his son, Kotoshironushi no Mikoto (Ebisu), who is a representative god of good fortune along with his father. The secondary deities enshrined are Takateruhime no Mikoto, the female deity of Okuninushi no Mikoto, Mizokuihime no Mikoto, who is Kotoshironushi no Mikoto’s wife, and Amenohohi no Mikoto, the second son of Emperor Soteru-Okami and the ancestor deity of the Izumo Kuni no Miyatsuko.

The date of its founding is unknown, but it is said that from the mid-Heian period onwards, it was deeply revered by the Shichito (Kisaito) clan, one of the Seven Clans of Musashi samurai. During the Edo period, it was also revered by the Tokugawa family, and as the Tokugawa family had a villa nearby, it is said that the second shogun, Hidetada, and the third shogun, Iemitsu, visited the shrine to worship and rest during falconry.

I have fond memories of going there as a child and seeing the food stalls lined up along the path from the entrance to the main hall during festivals and New Year’s visits.
I plan to visit again when I’m in the area.
Please note that you must dismount your bicycle at the gate in front of the third torii gate, and walking dogs is prohibited.

Thank you for watching.
